Some other wins in the Cheltenham Festival have included: the Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle in 2008; the Champion Bumper in 2006; the Royal and Sun Alliance Novices’ Hurdle in 2006; and the Grand Annual Handicap Chase in 2005. Other Grade 1 winners have included: the Powers Gold Cup in 2008; the Hatton’s Grace Hurdle in 2007; the Royal Bond Novices’ Hurdle in 2007; the Fighting Fifth Hurdle in 2007; and, the Deloitte Novices’ Hurdle in 2007.
Another one of the best performing Irish Jockeys is that of Niall Madden (a.k.a. Slippers). Slippers is named as such in reference to his father who was nicknamed ‘Boots’. Madden won the 2006 Grand National Steeplechase at Aintree.
Tom O’Brien is one of the Irish Jockeys known for his racing prowess. Born in 1986, O’Brien was given the prestigious award of Champion Amateur Rider in the 2005/2006 season. Having ridden thirty two winners, O’Brien turned professional and went on to win two races at his first pro meeting. In 2007, O’Brien came second in the Grand National and in 2009 won the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
Another one of those stick-out Irish Jockeys is Richard Hughes. Born 1973, Hughes is a flat jockey who has had many major wins throughout his career. Some of these include the Queen Anne Stakes in 2009; the Coronation Stakes in 2007; and the Cheveley Park Stakes in 2006. Hughes has also won many French titles, with the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud in 2008 and the Criterium de Saint-Cloud in 2006 just a couple.
Adrian Maguire is another of the Irish Jockeys that has made a mark. A former jockey now, Maguire was born in 1971 and is currently a trainer. Having ridden over a thousand winners in the United Kingdom Maguire is regarded as one of the best jump jockeys.
As Irish Jockeys go, Stephen Donohoe is also up there. A flat race jockey he was born in 1984. In 2006, Donohoe had forty four wins. He also won the Lester Award for Apprentice Jockey of the Year.
